India’s biggest life insurer, Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) is upgrading its technology to serve its customers better. LIC has recently issued tenders for upgrade of its system to handle documents and speed up policy writing, creation of call center that can handle queries in multiple languages, and purchase of iPads for mobility solutions.

While, LIC has not given any official note on scaling up the technology, below are some of the technology upgrades done by LIC till now:

Tender to buy 590 Tablets / iPads.
To create a new email archival system that could support 200,000 email accounts.
Tender to virtualize about 125,000 desktops and laptops.
Tender for two-factor authentication on desktops, including fingerprint scanners.
Modernize enterprise document management system used to process policies
Creation of a call center.

The customer base of LIC is massive and while they have been constantly increasing their technology infrastructure, there is still a huge list of tasks which need to be completed. Private players, especially the recent entrants enter with world-class technology and are able to entertain their prospects and customers in a much easier manner.

With its huge branch and agent network, the biggest challenge with LIC will be to centralize all their data and offer top-class customer service. Last year, LIC launched their first online term insurance policy – LIC eTerm plan to tap the increasing demand for online policies.
