There is some really good news for the passengers of Indian trains. IRCTC is soon going to offer baggage insurance for train passengers. Indian Railways is the 4th largest railway network in the world, transporting 7.6 billion passengers annually.

To begin with, the baggage insurance will be offered as an optional purchase while booking e-tickets on the IRCTC website. If a passenger buys baggage insurance then, he or she can claim the insurance money in case of baggage loss or robbery of the baggage. Belongings like laptop, mobile phone or any other valuable articles will be covered as part of the baggage insurance package while traveling. The policy would also cover hospitalization benefit during the journey.

The premium of this policy will depend on
– the length of the journey and
– the class of travel

The tie-up to launch this baggage insurance is being formalized with New India Assurance for now. With over 2 million passengers travelling every day and about 52 per cent opting for e-ticketing, there would be a significant section of passengers who will opt for this unique insurance policy. This initiative of “baggage insurance” by IRCTC would aid to insure the valued merchandise and thus give passenger relief for his baggage being insured. It could be a win-win situation for both the passengers and IRCTC.
