A Consumer Protection Forum in Kanpur ordered Reliance General Insurance Company Limited to pay Rs 27,000 to Complainant Surendra Kumar Dwivedi.

The Complainant had a two-wheeler insurance policy from Reliance General Insurance and the insurer rejected his insurance claim citing the reason that the complainant had delayed the entire process of filing the claim.

Surendra Kumar Dwivedi had a two-wheeler insurance policy for the period September 28, 2007 till September 29, 2008 from Reliance General Insurance Company. His two-wheeler was stolen in January 2008 and subsequently he reported this to the police. After obtaining the report from the police, that the motorcycle could not be traced, he registered the claim with reliance general requesting compensation since the two-wheeler was stolen. Reliance insurance company rejected his claim as Mr. Dwivedi had informed the insurance company late and did not give satisfactory reply to the company when it had sought information. But after going through the documentary proof and arguments, the consumer forum observed that it was deficiency of service on the part of insurance company and hence it was liable to honour the claim.

Reliance Geneeral Insurance has been ordered to pay Rs 27,000 to the complainant within 30 days of the order. The forum further stated in the order that if Reliance General fails to pay the amount, then Surendra Kumar was liable to collect interest at the rate of 10 per cent per anum from the date of filing of the complaint.
