State government of India has decided to treat Cataract surgery as a daycare surgery. Until now, health insurance providers did not consider cataract treatment under daycare treatments. Therefore to receive insurance benefits for treatment of cataract, the policyholder had to be admitted to a hospital for a minimum of 24 hours hospitalization.

About 8 lacs cataract surgeries are conducted across the state, out of which 50% are conducted in private clinics and hospitals. This move by the government will help cataract patients to get benefit under health insurance policy. Health Minister Dr. Deepak Sawant announced this decision in one of the medical conference organized by the Bombay Ophthalmologist Association.
