National Institute of Engineering (NIE) college authorities have decided to provide comprehensive personal accident insurance coverage to its students.

Starting this year, around 2,690 engineering students will get covered under an accident policy. The decision was made by the college authorities in the wake of a recent accident case. Srikanth Prabhu, a student of NIE met with an accident and suffered severe head injuries on April 10. He has been admitted to a hospital in Bengaluru and has already incurred huge medical bills.

Most personal accident insurance policies cover accidental death, and temporary total and permanent total disablement due to an accident. Additionally, insurance companies pay daily hospital cash and other such benefits.

In the last 2 years, more than 12 students of NIE have suffered minor injuries. A majority of students travel by bike or car and it is only wise that they have an insurance plan that covers them against any personal accidents. The college authorities have thus taken a unanimous decision to insure these students.
