IRDAI has issued guidelines to all insurance companies on certain exclusions being put in force in health insurance policies. It has been noticed that some of the internal congenital diseases, genetic diseases or disorders are not allowed to be incorporated as exclusions in the terms and conditions of the policy contract.

However, it was observed that many health insurance products provided by the insurer did not provide cover to newborns/infants with internal congenital birth defects from the first day. Thus this proves to act against the above-mentioned clause.

The Insurance Regulator has mandated that health insurance products should cover all newborns and unborn children. The above-mentioned provisions shall be followed without any deviation or restrictions like waiting periods and sub-limits and effective immediately.
