Are Maternity Expenses covered in health insurance plans? | Health Insurance FAQ #27
Feb 16, 2018 | 854 VIEWS
Not all health insurance plans cover maternity expenses. In fact most health insurance plans DO NOT cover maternity costs. However, there are a few plans do cover the maternity expenses after a few years of continuous coverage of the plan - so there is a sort of waiting period for the maternity expenses.

Also, there are limits to which the expenses will get covered. For example, they may cover upto Rs. 35,000 as part of the maternity expenses.

Let me list some plans which cover maternity expenses.

Religare Joy - So in the 3 lakh version of the plan, maternity expenses will get covered after 9 months of you taking the plan. You have a upper limit of Rs. 35,000 as part of these expenses. New-born baby is also covered for 90 days with an upper limit on expenses set at Rs. 30,000

HDFC Ergo myhealth:Medisure Classic - You get a coverage of upto 10% of your Sum Insured in case of a normal delivery and 20% of the Sum Insured Insured in case of a C-Section. New-born baby is also covered under this head and limits itself. There is a waiting period of 48 months to get this benefit.

Apollo Munich Easy Health Exclusive - The plan variant with covers between Rs. 15,000 to 30,000 for normal delivery and Rs. 25,000 to Rs. 50,000 for a C-Section. There is a waiting period of 4-6 years for availing this benefit.

So as you see the Religare Joy plan seems very attractive with just a 9 month waiting period. Of course not all the expenses may be taken care of in any of the plans as they all have upper limits.

Pregnancy is not really an event which health insurance companies try to cover as it is more of a planned event. At least in most cases.
