Traditionally health insurance covers only expenses which are incurred when the policyholder is admitted in the hospital for at least 24 hours. In case of any treatment which does not require hospitalisation or hospital stay which is less than 24 hours, no payout is made to the policyholder.

With technological advancements, lots of treatments no more requires the patient to be admitted in the hospital at all. The patient undergoes the treatment or surgery in a few hours and they can then go home.

Insurance companies realised this advancement in medical science and adapted their plans to start covering such treatment costs. They list down a list of procedures and surgeries for which the 24 hour hospitalisation clause is no more required to make a claim. The list is provided by each company in the document called the “Policy wordings”. You should refer to this document to check which all treatments and procedures are covered under this head.

So Day Care Treatments in health insurance refers to those list of procedures of treatments which don’t require the patient to be admitted in the hospital for 24 hours and are still covered under the policy.

The list of Day Care procedures is not a standard list and may vary from company to company. But each company will mostly cover all the standard procedures and treatments and is quite exhaustive. Most of the companies cover more than 100 day care procedures. You can see the list of 150 Day Care Procedures covered by the iHealth - ICICI Lombard Complete Health Insurance Plan.
