On 16th September 2013, the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (IRDA) launched the Insurance Repository in India. This is the first-of-its-kind initiative in the insurance sector across the world. Insurance Repository System will provide policyholders a facility to keep insurance policies in electronic form or dematerialized form.

The insurance policyholders can maintain, store and retrieve their policies in an electronic form similar to the way stocks and shares are maintained in demat form. The policyholder can modify or revise their insurance policies with speed and accuracy.

Definition of Insurance Repository

“Insurance Repository” means a company formed and registered under the Companies Act, 1956 (1 of 1956) and which has been granted a certificate of registration by the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (IRDA) for maintaining data of insurance policies in Electronic form on behalf of Insurers. The Insurance Repositories provide the ease of holding insurance policies issued in an electronic form. 

The objective of the Insurance Repository System

1) To keep insurance policies in electronic form

2) To undertake changes, modifications, and revisions in the insurance policy with speed and accuracy

3) To bring about efficiency, transparency, and cost reduction in the issuance and maintenance of insurance policies

4) Act as a one-stop point for various policy-related service requirements
